Mei Yi Foo - 25th July
Mei Yi was winner of the BBC Best Newcomer of the Year award in 2013, notably for her award-winning album Musical Toys with its ‘liberating and virtuoso display of pianism’ (The Times).
6 Piano Etudes
6 Kleine Klavierstücke, Op.19
Le Tombeau de Couperin
On her previous visit to us in 2017, Mei Yi played a programme which was challenging for her as performer and enthralling for the audience. Her programme this season offers another chance for our audience to experience something different! Mei Yi has worked with the contemporary Korean composer Unsuk Chin for 15 years and has consistently championed her music, which has been described as "modern in language, but lyrical and non-doctrinaire in communicative power".
Schoenberg's final movement from his Klavierstücke was written shortly after the death of Mahler and it has since been dubbed a tombeau de Mahler, eloquently matching Ravel’s own tribute to friends lost in the Great War.
