Steven Osborne - 29 March 2020

Following the advice given in the Prime Minister's press conference held on Monday 16th March, it is with great regret that we announce that this recital has been cancelled.  We hope to arrange another date for a visit by Steven Osborne, and if that is possible we will announce it here as well as by email to members.

"This was a remarkable concert, thought-provoking on one level

but heart-breakingly touching on another." (seenandheard-international.com)

Rarely does an event in Darlington feature in a national publication but in the February edition of the BBC Music Magazine, commemorating the 250th anniversary year of Beethoven’s birth, Steven Osborne’s performance of the final three piano sonatas on 29th March for the Society, is highlighted as one of “10 unmissable concerts in 2020”.  In a year when there are a multitude of celebratory performances of his works throughout the UK, this is quite a plaudit for the Society and for Darlington.

Remarkably, when Steven ends our season, it will be an unbelievable 22 years since his only previous performance for the Society in February 1998!  Since then, he has become one of Britain’s most treasured musicians whose insightful and idiomatic interpretations of diverse repertoire – including Beethoven, Schubert, Debussy, Ravel, Liszt, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Rachmaninov, Medtner, Messiaen, Britten, Tippett, Crumb and Feldman - show an immense musical depth.  Steven’s extensive diary commitments have thwarted, until now, efforts to arrange a recital, but we are extremely fortunate to secure and hear him perform these pinnacles of the piano repertoire before he plays this programme in New York.
