After another wonderful recital series in 2019-20 we now look forward to our 25th anniversary season. A few years ago the future of the Society was threatened because of the retirement of a number of committee members and a declining membership, but with a determination that classical piano recitals in Darlington would not end so easily, a new committee has taken the society onward and upward.

There has been no conscious effort to celebrate this season with a specific theme.  Celebration of the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth could have been an option but there are many opportunities elsewhere to celebrate this and we did end our last season with the great trilogy of his last three sonatas played by the marvellous Steven Osborne.

Once again, balancing artists we approached with opportunities offered and popular returnees is a big challenge.  We bookend the season with two very young debutants in Darlington, who both succeeded in major competitions in 2018 – Eric Lu at the  Leeds International Piano competition and George Harliono, a spectacular YCAT artist.  In between, we welcome back not so “old friends” in Mei Yi Foo, Alasdair Beatson and Viv McLean, the last two bringing to us a programme  of works for piano duo, an experience the Society has missed since we heard Goldstone and Clemmow in 2015.  Two new faces, Roman Rabinovich and Antonina Suhanova, complete the roster of performers.

We continue to be grateful for commercial and personal sponsorship but additional sponsors would be most welcome.  Ultimately, the life blood of any Society is dependent upon membership levels and audience numbers, so please continue to spread the word, particularly amongst the young!

Reciprocal arrangements for the purchase of their half price season tickets have once again been made with Teesside Music Society.
